If you’re normally against product placement in the media, you might be hesitant to indulge The Lego Group by watching The Lego Movie. But according to Oliver Sava at The A.V. Club, you may be missing out on a movie with emotional depth and a good message.

He points out that this is not the first movie to prominently feature toys in the storyline. Wreck-It Ralph and Toy Story are just two examples of movies that have done so, albeit with a variety of toys rather than one specific product. At the same time, the author of the article claims this movie goes beyond simple product placement. In fact, he says, “The film offers invaluable lessons for future projects based on licensed properties, not just telling a story inspired by a product, but telling a story about a product, providing a practical, personal perspective that adds remarkable depth to a movie that is also gorgeous and a lot of fun.”
