Derek is the Executive Vice President and General Manager of USA TODAY responsible for leading the operations, brand revitalization and business growth of the enterprise across all platforms.
Derek has deep experience building brands and growing traditional and digital businesses in the financial services, media and entertainment, and publishing industries. From 2011 to 2013, Derek was General Manager, Multicultural Media at AOL Huffington Post Media Group, where he led the overall strategy, audience development, operational and business performance for the launch and management of several new multicultural websites. Derek joined Huffington Post in 2009 as Senior Vice President, Business Development, where he was responsible for structuring strategic partnerships to scale the business and deliver material growth in content offerings, brand presence, audience engagement and revenues.
Prior to joining Huffington Post, Derek led business development and operations for CNN Interactive; headed partnership development for SkillGames – a Walker Digital / Walt Disney start-up venture; and was a founding member and head of the sponsorship marketing group at American Express. Derek earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering & Management from Tufts University and an MBA degree from the Wharton School. He is the business sponsor for Gannett’s Leadership and Diversity Council and previously served on the boards of Brewster Academy and South Orange Performing Arts Center. Derek and his wife are the proud parents of three children.
