Driving Home a Better Future in the Connected Car

April 30, 2012  |  All Things Digital  |  No Comments

In the future cars will be shared, able to avoid traffic and, above all, driverless. Or, at least that’s the hope of several of the speakers at last week’s MLOVE conference in Monterey . Looking the furthest into the future was Brad Templeton , a consultant to Google and former head chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Templeton outlined the impact that driverless cars could have — everything from fewer traffic deaths to lower emissions to less space allotted for roads and parking. Just reducing the 34,000 annual car-related deaths in the U.S. should be reason enough to go driverless, but Templeton notes it would also allow for fewer cars that could be available on demand and take up less space. “Human drivers are really kind of bad,” Templeton said

Hedge-fund manager Philip Falcone agreed to step aside eventually as the public face of his LightSquared Inc. venture, a concession that may keep the wireless-telecommunications company from defaulting on its debt, people familiar with the negotiations said. Meet the anti-Groupon

Meet the anti-Groupon

April 30, 2012  |  Blog  |  No Comments

FORTUNE -- There's a favorite pastime these days in tech startup circles -- bashing Groupon. The once-hot daily deals kingpin is being slammed for everything from accounting shenanigans to lack of internal controls and overspending to grow its business. Perhaps worst of all, critics say Groupon is a magnet for cheapskates who flock to merchants to redeem deep discounts and never return -- hardly a winning model for the retailers Groupon counts on as repeat customers. So has a company that bills itself as the anti-Groupon (GRPN) found a formula that works for both consumers and retailers? That's the hope of

Yahoo Claims Facebook Bought Patents to Countersue It

April 30, 2012  |  Blog  |  No Comments

Facebook purchased in the last five months eight of ten patents it has cited in a counterclaim to a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Yahoo, and several were purchased after Yahoo filed the suit, the Internet portal claimed in a filing on Friday before a federal court. Yahoo has also alleged that Facebook has infringed two more of its patents in addition to the ten patents it sued for last month. Facebook denied earlier this month Yahoo's claims that it had infringed the 10 patents, and filed a counterclaim that Yahoo had infringed 10 Facebook patents. "On information and belief, many, if not
